Gouche/Tempera on canvas (1827-28)

By Auguste Etienne Francois Mayer (1805-1890), signed and inscribed on thew stern of the Turkish frigate.

Mayer was born in Brest, France on 3rd July 1805. He worked mainly in tempera 
(the white of an egg which binds pigment), gouache and oil as well as being an engraver. 
He exhibited at the French Salon from 1824 to 1869 and was just 22 years of age when he 
recorded the battle of Navarino as a guest of the French navy.

His work is represented in the museums of brest, Dijon, Rouen, 
Versailles and Paris (at the museum of maritime art).
